In the final days of 2020, U.S. Army General Gustave F. Perna, chief operating officer of the U.S. government’s Operation Warp Speed vaccine initiative, and Moncef Slaoui, the initiative’s chief advisor, reported that 14 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine had been distributed (the Moderna vaccine had yet to receive FDA approval), with only 2.1 million people having received their initial dose. These numbers were far below the government’s initial estimate that 20 million people would be vaccinated by the end of the year.
